Petrifilm Plates are small, flat, sample-ready plates that enable food processors to perform on-site microbial testing easily and efficiently. Their innovative design features films coated with nutrients and a gelling agent.

Accurate results in three easy steps: inoculate, incubate and count.

The plates may be used to test raw materials, in-process products, finished products, and the plant environment. Petrifilm Plates may also be used as part of a plant’s Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) program. Sterilization destroys all forms of microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, spores and fungi on an object. The goal of a sterilization process is to assure that all instruments are free from contamination. There are five basic steps in sterilization itself:

  1. Clean and disinfect – Foreign materials are removed, making instruments ready for further processing.
  2. Prep and Pack – Packaging material and internal and external chemical indicators are used to monitor the effectiveness of sterilization.
  3. Sterilize – Instruments are exposed to the actual sterilant (steam, ethylene oxide etc). Routine monitoring of the sterilization process is done through the use of displays and printouts from the equipment and the proper selection and use of biological, enzymatic and chemical indicators.
  4. Store – Instruments are removed from sterilizer/processor and quality system documentation is completed. Documentation for each individual pack is recommended by AAMI, ASHCSP, AORN and JCAHO to ensure that a load or pack can be identified and found in the event of a recall.
  5. Issue and use – Requested items are retrieved from storage, checked to ensure that the external chemical monitor has reached its endpoint (eg. color change or migration) and issued for use. Prior to use, the internal chemical monitors are checked to ensure that sterilization process conditions penetrated to the inside of the pack.
